IN THE WORDS OF THE ARTIST
This series came from my fascination discovering family photo albums for sale in thrift stores. It was a strange feeling looking into their lives without permission and even stranger that the albums usually cost five dollars or less. How did these albums get to the thrift store? Were these people still alive? Do they have relatives that would want these photographs back? Over the years, I have purchased family photo albums from different countries and eras. Some photos have small pieces of information such as first names, dates and locations hand-written on their backs.
I began painting and drawing on the photos in 2011. Most times, I use bright colors and playful designs to breathe some life into them. It is my goal to keep these people in the present rather than the past.ABOUT JON HANDEL

Don’t worry, Copenhagen-based Pippin Barr has given you a second chance in the form of The Artist Is Present: The Video Game.
